You will need a place to heat and melt the wax. You can use your kitchen stove, or an electric cooker to complete this step. Remember that wax cools and changes temperatures quickly so you will want to be near your heating area at all times while making your candles. You will need a Double Boiler. This is used to melt your wax in and it is best if it is made of stainless steel or aluminum. It has been said that you can use a saucepan with a coffee can inside if you are looking for an inexpensive way to create a double boiler. You could also use a smaller saucepan inside a larger saucepan but this has a tendency to create uneven heating so be sure to thoroughly check your wax's temperature if using this type of double boiler.
Making Candles at Home: What you WILL need:
A thermometer is an essential necessity. Candy or cooking thermometers are recommended by most candle making experts. They need to range from 38 degrees C (100 degrees F) and 180 degrees C (356 degrees F). You can find these at craft suppliers' stores or on the web or at kitchen suppliers' stores or on the web.
Kitchen scales are ultimate for weighing your candle making materials.
Measuring jug is needed to determine the amount of wax you will need to fill your candle moulds. One way to determine this is to fill your mould with water and pour it into the jug. For every 10 fluid ounces of water you will need 9 ounces of wax.
A tall container ideally cylindrical is used for holding liquefied wax and is known as your dipping can.
A water bowl or water bath is needed to help keep your dipping can at the right temperature. Hot water can be used to keep the wax warm and cold water can be used to help decrease time in the process of cooling.
You can use a clothing iron to even out the bottom of your newly made candle. Using the heat from a hairdryer will keep your wax pliable and/or soften it to fix imperfections. Some form of jug, ideally metal with a spout, is needed to pour your wax into your molds.
Other materials that are essential for candle making are wicking needles available in a range of sizes and used to put the wick into a mold and secure the wick at the bottom of the mold. Wax glue is a sticky wax used to glue wax together or to apply beads, or ribbons, or other decorations to the candle. Mold seal is a reusable putty or sealing compound. You can use it to fix the wick in the mold and to prevent liquid wax from leaking and prevent water from the water bath coming into your mold.
