What is cashmere ?
Cashmere is the down shed annually by Kashmir goats living in the mountainous regions of Tibet and Mongolia. In order for the goats to survive, they grow coarse outer hair that repels the elements. Beneath that external coat, along the animal's throat and belly, is the longer, finer fiber, cashmere, which insulates the goats from the frigid air. It takes each goat as long as four years to produce enough cashmere for a single sweater, double that for a blanket! To collect the cashmere, each animal is combed by hand every spring.
Not all cashmere is equal :
Manufacturers of cheaper cashmere products use the short fibers from the back and legs of the Kashmir goat, where it is coarser, but also less costly to purchase and produce. Occasionally other fibers will be mixed with the cashmere, but will be deceptively labeled as "pure or 100% percent cashmere." The Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute (CCMI) was created to protect consumers, retailers and manufacturers and promote genuine cashmere.
