Weighted Blanket Autism - Weight Blankets
A weighted blanket is a new kind of security blanket that provides comfort to children and adults suffering from autism.
The special blankets, which generally weigh around 15 to 25 pounds, have been found to help calm overanxious or over-stimulated individuals of any age with autism, ADHD, or other sensory and processing difficulties due to neurological impairment.
Weighted Blanket - Find it. Love it. Buy it.
Weighted blankets have proven effective in calming, reducing hyperactivity, improving attention and focus, and helping with the regulation of the individual's own sensory needs and emotions.
The blankets are usually constructed with large, sewn-in pockets into which small self-contained weights are evenly distributed. The weighted articles apply pressure to the body and can stimulate the individual's sensory system, which may help him to relax. This is a situation similar to that which occurs with young infants with immature sensory systems. The weighted blanket may provide the same comfort to an older child or adult, just as the very young infant is comforted by the gentle, evenly distributed pressure of being swaddled in a blanket.
Weighted blankets should be constructed of either a washable or waterproof fabric that can be cleaned with a damp, soapy sponge. The substance used as weights should be self-contained and removable for periodic cleaning or adjustment. A soft washable cover or case for the blanket should alleviate the need to launder the blanket itself.
