Welding blankets and industrial safety curtains protect workers from the dangers connected with welding, cutting, grinding, and other specialized manufacturing processes. Generally classified as light, medium and heavy duty, welding blankets, are available in a variety of fabric options to meet the needs of the job. Selection of blanket fabric is dependent on several criteria, including durability, weight, melting temperature and abrasion resistance.

Welding blankets, a type of fire blanket, can be constructed from heat-treated fiberglass, silica, neoprene, and other substances that will create a fire-resistant barrier that will protect persons, property, and equipment from welding sparks, spatter and slag.

The application for which it will be used also helps determine the most appropriate welding blanket for maximum protection:

Will welding occur in an enclosed space or open area?

What will be the degree of spatter - minimal or excessive?

Will hot, molten pieces be dropped onto fabric?

Answering the above questions will guide your choice for the best blanket for the specific job:

Select light duty blanket material for work in open, low-risk space where spatter is at a minimum.

Select heavy-duty fabrics for the effective capture of concentrated spatter and red-hot pieces; heavy-duty fabric offers the maximum protection to personnel and equipment.

Select medium duty fabrics to use as blanket drapes or drop cloths for welding applications with a moderate degree of fire risk
