Medicine Cabinet – Big Changes in Medicine Cabinets

Medicine cabinets have changed. You won't believe what today's medicine cabinets can do. Maybe it would be easier to talk about what they can't do!

Find, Compare, and Buy Medicine Cabinets

Modern bathroom medicine cabinets certainly have come a long way. They are no longer simply a place to store medicine with a mirror on the front. One of the most obvious differences is size.

Some older homes still have those original single door cabinets that were rectangles that measured one foot by two feet. Although the single-door version is still the most widely used, today's medicine cabinets can be two to four times larger.

Other than the size, at first glance today's medicine cabinets don't appear that much different from their ancestors:

But they are different. One fabulous new feature is a built-in defogger. How many times have you had to wipe your bathroom medicine cabinet mirror after a shower, only to get a foggy at best reflection? This feature prevents fog and condensation from ever building up. You can see yourself the moment you step out of the shower. That could be good or bad!

Take a look inside and you may find a fully mirrored interior for less opening and closing during the morning ritual. You can open your medicine cabinet and shave or put your makeup on with everything you need at your fingertips. When you are done, simply close the cabinet. To make things even easier many cabinets have built in electrical outlets for shavers or blow dryers. Many also have cosmetic-friendly lighting. You can even buy a cabinet with a telescoping magnifying mirror.

Medicine cabinets are not just rectangles recessed into the wall anymore. So many shapes and sizes are available that you may have trouble deciding. There are squares, circles, ovals and octagons. You can have decorative etching for an antique look and beveled edges for dimension. There are metal finishes, wood finishes, painted finishes and faux finishes. They can be hung on the wall, recessed into it or built into the corner. All of these features add to the appearance, but unfortunately they also add to the price tag. Custom models with all the bells and whistles can run in the thousands of dollars.

If you really want the bathroom medicine cabinet that will have the neighbors green with envy, how about one with a built-in TV? New models have plasma TVs built right into the mirror. When the TV is off you wouldn't even know it was there. When you turn the TV on, the picture is as crisp and clear as the TV in your family room.

With bathroom medicine cabinets like this, you may never want to leave your bathroom. If you have a phone and a fridge in there, you may never need to.
