Fashions for our four-legged friends range from a utilitarian waterproof dog coats to neoprene hunting vest to a cheery tail-waggin' yellow raincoat to a jaunty plaint toggle coat. Service vests for dogs that attend to owners with special challenges are specially designed to carry essential items in their pockets, and sometimes have sewn in handles for use when walking.
Forget that your pet already has a genuine fur coat – he'll be dressed to the "K-9's" in puppy couture from designers who've literally gone to the dogs. Icons like Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Prada and even the venerable Burberry are turning out doggie duds that are bow-wowing fashion-savvy pet owners.
Style aside, the most important requirement for your dog's coat or jacket is that it fit properly, is comfortable and safe to wear, and keeps him warm and dry in harsh weather. If your pet hides behind the couch when he sees you reaching for his dog jacket, there's probably a good reason. Before you invest in a dog jacket or coat, accurately measure your pet.
Different manufacturers of dog apparel may require different measurements, check the size guidelines before picking a style and placing your order. To obtain a comprehensive set of measurements of your pet, follow these steps:
- Measure along your dog's backbone, from the base of his head (where his collar would rest) to the base of his tail (where its attached) – when ordering, this is called the "top line measurement."
- Your dog's girth measurement is also relevant. Wrap your tape measure around his chest at widest point, which is usually right behind his front legs. If you have a large dog, with a large girth, going up a size in the top line measurement might be a wise decision, since additional fabric will be needed to achieve good coverage.
If your dog just has one coat or jacket for use in cold or weather, make sure it's constructed of insulating material that is waterproof and machine washable – a fleece coat with an outer shell of Gore-Tex™ would fit the bill. When you come back from your winter walk, just detach the jacket and hang it up to dry or toss it in wash if its covered in mud. You'll keep your house clean and pet comfortable!
Some dog breeds, even though large, are indoor pets. Slender greyhounds, for example, have especially thin coats and a lack of body fat that makes temperature extremes intolerable (except for brief outings). Dispense with fashion concerns when outfitting a dog with these sensitivities and focus primarily on protection. Make sure your greyhound's dog coat provides ample coverage to keep him well insulated during his outing.
Whether your canine companion is a clothes horse or cares less, keep in mind that a healthy, happy pet is always in fashion.
