Infant Coats – Winter dress coats for infant girls and boys

When taking the baby out on a cool day, don't forget to bundle up your bundle of joy with the perfect baby outer wear. Whether he's sitting on Santa's lap or she's playing in the park, you can find the coat to keep your little one warm and looking cute, too.

Like their adult counterparts, infant and toddler coats come in duffle, swing, anorak, and ski-jacket styles, just to name a few.

For brisk days, the duffle is a great choice because of its classic style, woolen warmth, and the easy toggle fasteners. Swing coats are a good option for young girls, especially for formal occasions, as they exude simple yet luxurious style. The anorak works for windy or rainy days, whisking away moisture and allowing for plenty of ventilation. The ski-jacket style, perhaps the most common, is simple and locks in body warmth while locking out the crisp air. These jackets are typically thick and fluffy and are gently elasticized at the waist for a snug fit.

Winter dress coats for infants and toddlers come in essentially the same variety of fabrics as adult coats. While you typically do not see a little one dressed in a genuine fur jacket or camel hair coat, those pint-size fashions certainly are available, provided by upscale designers like Dior, Burberry and Guess, which all design for baby.

More mainstream toddler brands include Osh Kosh B'Gosh, Carters, Lands End, and Little Me. While brands such as these do occasionally feature faux fur coats or "pleather" (faux leather) blends, their baby coats are traditionally nylon jackets (which wick away moisture) with fleece linings (which keeps baby warm) or Polar fleece coats that keep in baby's body heat but can be easily compressed and stuffed into the diaper bag.

Additional available features of infant coats include mitten clips on the cuffs, drawstring hoods and waists, and elasticized cuffs. Also, the majority of baby coats are machine washable, so you don't need to worry about how to take care of spills and spit-ups.

But there's a lot more to infant outerwear than the coat. Most of a person's body heat goes out through the head, so it's very important for babies to wear a hat in cold weather. For only slightly cool days, a cap knitted or crocheted by grandma will do the trick. For more frigid days, however, fleece or microfiber hats with fleece lining are necessary. Mittens are also a key component of baby outerwear and you can certainly find some brightly colored hand-coverings to keep them happy.

The distinguishing factor between baby and adult coats (besides, of course, the sizing) is the freedom and range of colors and patterns. While older teens and adults usually desire to look respectable, often opting for solid, classic colors, babies are adorable in any color in the rainbow, from florescent green to hot pink. Prints are another means for baby's self-expression. From florals to cartoon characters to pictures of their favorite animal, you can find a coat to keep your little one happy and warm.
