For dress or casual wear, your winter coat must first keep you warm and dry, and not so cumbersome to restrict movement (so you can easily dig your car out of the snow after work!).
Everyone needs a winter coat. Styles to suit men and women, boys and girls, are waiting to be chosen, just like Christmas Trees! The following suggestions apply to styles for both sexes, all ages, when it comes to picking the perfect coat:
Look for winter coats in these styles and fabrics to get you through the season :
- Thick wool single- or double-breasted full-length or longer coat. If it has a shawl or notched collar, you're your neck in a warm wool scarf and tuck it under the collar.
- Fur or faux fur. The warming value for either material is about the same – the key in extremely cold winter temps is to wear the longest version possible, at least mid-knee and even longer.
- Leather, but a supple, pliable type that won't stiffen up in a cold climate. If you choose leather for a winter coat, make sure it has a warm (wool, fur, heavy flannel) lining that can be zipped or buttoned in.
- Hooded wool toggle coat. To stay warm in cold weather, you must cover the head. A hooded toggle coat in a insulating fabric like wool will meet that need. The shorter length of a classic toggle coat will allow a little more freedom of movement, but wear it with pants for maximum warmth.
- Goose down. A down quilted coat is the ultimate in lightweight warmth –look for a hooded style with fur or faux fur trim and lining.
When you purchase a coat, extend its seasonable wear by selecting one with a detachable lining and/or hood. A warm lining will transform a spring topper into a toasty winter coat with a flick of a zipper. Detachable hoods are also a way to turn fall jackets into winter coats.
Layering is another way of warding off winter's chill. Wear your summer-weight raincoat over a hooded fleece jacket and you have two garments that together can warm you as well as a bona fide winter coat.
Utility toppers, like a barn coat or duster, also make great winter coats – they're usually made of heavy cotton canvas, and have warm linings, and are treated with waterproofing material to boot. Whatever the style, any coat you wear in the winter can be a winter coat ... just remember to stay warm, stay dry, cover your head and neck, and eat a hot bowl of soup before you head outside!
