A flattering fit in a complementary cut is paramount in choosing the right coat for a woman. Know what style suits your figure best before venturing online to buy a coat. A leather trench coat might overwhelm a petite frame; or a boxy pea coat that hits at the waist might make a full-figured lady look shorter.
If you love a style that might not love you back, compromise. A scaled down trench in cotton twill, no epaulets or big patch pockets, might streamline the look, and lengthen your frame. Exchange that short pea coat that cuts you off at the waist – opt for a longer version that goes past your hip for a slenderizing effect.
Coats for women should fit well over their clothes, whether dressed for the office or the grocery store. They should protect their garments, and in the cases of a hooded coat, protect their hair! A woman's coat should have pockets, hidden or explosed, to stash a hankie, or gloves, or small pocketbook.
Popular styles of women's winter coats include the always-classic trench coat – but done in leather with a warm wool lining! Single- and double-breasted wool coats (camel's hair a favorite), fur and faux fur, and the ultra cozy, western-looking shearling coats are all favored winter styles. For extreme temperatures, invest in good quality full-length quilted goose down coat with hood, providing lightweight warmth in bitter temps.
For springtime, fabrics more than styles change – store your leather trench and buy a poplin coat; trade in your wool toggle for a vinyl duffle coat to beat the rain. Micro fibers, poly-cotton blends, sateen – they are all attractive, fresh choices for spring wear.
In caring for your coat, whether a winter wool, fall gabardine or spring sateen, follow instructions on the label, and always put your coat away for the season freshly laundered or dry cleaned, covered in vented plastic. You'll thank yourself next year when you get to put it on again!
