Animal fur like sheep's wool was spun as early as the Stone Age because of its warmth, abundance and the ease of production. By the 13 th century the hand turned spindle was invented and in the 16 th the foot pedal spinning wheel was developed, making the process even easier. Finally, in the 18 th century the modern spinning machines were created, making wool easier and faster to produce.

Wool is most notable for its warmth and is in fact the warmest natural fiber. This is because of the nature of the fibers, which have crimps and curls that create spongy, insulating pockets, make wool coats ideal for the cold winter months. However, there are numerous additional attributes of a good wool coat, including:

  • Absorbs 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp
  • Flame resistant
  • The warmest of all natural fibers
  • Wrinkle resistant
  • Provides excellent insulation
  • Dirt resistant
  • Resists creases, wear and tear

Wool Coat

Wool comes in many distinct forms. In addition to the classic tweed and simple felt we all know, there are several additional varieties common for wool coats. Melton is a heavy fabric without any gloss, whereas gabardine's tightly woven twill provides a water-resistant high sheen and is perfect for more tailored or dressy coat styles. Lambsdown is a heavy, knit fabric with a spongy feel to it and merino is the queen of the sheep's wool family with its soft, luxurious feel resembling cashmere.

While popular with men as well, the most common women's wool coat is probably the classic pea coat which harkens back to traditional navy wear. Double-breasted and short, this is a especially popular with younger wearers and comes in a variety of colors from traditional navy blue to scarlet.

The duffle coat is another popular wool design. Named for its Belgium town of origin, the cloth of this coat is a heavy wool traditionally is used for overcoats. For a dressier look, choose cashmere blend or pure cashmere.

Contrary to common thought, trench coats were originally made of wool, and continue to be a popular choice today. Thomas Burberry, who invented gabardine fabric, designed the first wool trench coat for the British army a decade before the first World War. The traditional mid-calf length of a trench coat provides extra warmth and is stylish for men and women alike.
