There are several things that go into quality cap embroidery. The variables include technology, equipment, design complexity and of course the experience and skillfulness of the digitizing and production staff.
Whether you currently do cap embroidery, or you are just starting your new endeavor, there are a few solid reasons why producing high-quality embroidered caps has gotten easier:
1 – Commercial embroidery machine manufacturers are producing higher quality cap frames. These 270-degree cap frame systems prove invaluable by providing a stable sewing field for the insfamously unstable cap sewing surface.
2 - Cap manufacturers are working in conjunction with embroiderers and embroidery equipment manufacturers to design caps that are better suited for embroidery.
3 – The quality of embroidery thread and materials has improved. Rayon threads are stronger and more consistent; polyester threads have more sheen and are easier on the equipment; metallic threads run and sew much better than before; big eye needles have made it easier to work with heavier threads; and improved embroidery backings provide new stability to the sewing surface.
4 - Digitizing systems have greatly improved. Newer systems offer more control over stitch pattern generation, stitch underlays and densities. They also offer improved automatic lettering packages, on-screen measuring tools, and slow motion on-screen design generation.
Even with all the improvements, embroidering a simple logo on a cap can still be tricky. You can't get around the fact that the front crown of a cap is a curved surface and embroidery machines were designed to sew on a flat surface. However, you can reduce mistakes while increasing your speed and profitability by:
1 – Digitize in-house. This gives you more control over the process and enables you to make quick adjustments.
2 – Invest in a 270-degree cap framing system
3 – Invest in an embroidery machine with an in-line needle configuration as opposed to a turret head
4 – Utilize the Internet. Working over the Internet makes it faster and easier for clients to get artwork to you and for you to show your client samples. It is a useful communication technology.
Cap embroidery will never be easy, but you can make it easier on you. With a little planning you can minimize errors and make cap embroidery a profitable piece of your embroidery business.
