Bomber jackets are defined as a short jacket that fits tightly at the waist and is often made of leather. It has long been associated with flying and in most cases is also the same as a "flight jacket."
The tight fitting waist and cuffs of the bomber jacket helped World War II aviators stay warm and still fit into their small cockpits with no problem.
A look back
The Cooper Company has been making authentic leather bomber jackets since 1917, creating them for the military during World War I.
They continue to do so today as well as selling to the general public. The Cooper business provides an extensive line of jackets and many bomber styles. Many of them are the exact same bomber jackets used by the U.S. Navy pilots. The Tomahawk is an A-2 design, the jacket pilots wore in Desert Storm. Certificates of authenticity are provided with all authentic jacket reproductions.
The company also produces a C-1, a B-3 Shearling and B-3 bomber jacket (shearling is a term that means the sheepskin and the wool were left intact). The B-3 is a classic designed to keep pilots warm in the past, when they were in cold high altitudes with open cockpits. The coat is reproduced today and has welted seams, heavy duty metal hardware closures, and side entry pockets.
The classic bomber jacket produced today emulates the aviators' jackets of the past. They are usually black or brown leather with a tight waist and cuffs, featuring hand-warmer pockets and wool or plain leather collars. However many different styles of the bomber are on the market in various colors and fabrics.
Many lightweight bomber jackets come in denim, corduroy, wool and synthetic fabrics of many colors, with cuffs that adjust with snaps and piping in a second color. Heavier, all-weather jackets are fully lined and have an inside pocket and an inside storm flap.
The bomber-jacket style evident in letterman jackets, sports team jackets, even NASCAR jackets! It's a transitional look for informal office settings and casual country wear. Men and women buy the time-tested style for its warmth, easy style and flattering silhouette.
