Motorcycle Jackets – An Icon Leather Motorcycle Jacket

"Don't forget your jacket" takes on new meaning if it's your motorcycle jacket. High tech fabrics and armor-reinforced denim have crashed the scene dominated by leather for years because of safety considerations.

The black leather motorcycle jacket and pants has morphed into a highly versatile and colorful version of its forerunner. Women's styles have become fashionably form fitting while adding protective padding and Kevlar armor in some cases.

Of course many riders still purchase the classic black leather biker jacket and pants suits. They are often constructed from premium cowhide, dyed black with all black hardware with vents under the arms and a removable belt. Today high tech linings are used inside leather motorcycle jackets. Motorcycle manufacturer Harley Davidson also sells its own extensive collection of bike leathers.

Safety impacts the motorcycle jacket design
Rider safety schools instruct new riders to never get on a bike in cut-offs, t-shirts or tennis shoes, as even a minor spill at a slow rate of speed could leave a rider with major scrapes and cuts. Bikers are urged to wear long, strong protective pants and long-sleeve shirts, heavy-duty motorcycle jackets, as well as a helmet and sturdy boots –a little more protection with a minimum effort.

Leatherwear is the frequent recommendation to all riders because of its rugged toughness in the event of a fall or accident. Skidding across pavement can do a lot of damage to a body, even dressed in leathers, so manufacturers of biking gear are also turning to high tech jackets and pants of ballistic fabric with dual density body armor in jacket elbows, shoulders, and back. One even offers a jean jacket with Kevlar-lined arms for abrasion protection. Reflective stripes on sleeves and legs are also being added to motorcycle jackets and pants as an added measure of visibility to oncoming motorists.

Jacket Styles
The biker jacket is in style for the general public and is worn by many who do not ride bikes. Movie stars like Brad Pitt have popularized the jackets (though he does ride!). Biker-wannabe jackets come in pink, white and black for women in many cases and usually black in men's sizes. Women's styles are form fitting, while men's may be boxier and bulkier. For biker-style fashions, many manufacturers forego the safety features they would include in the jackets intended for actual riding. If you intend to wear your biker fashion jacket on a motorcycle, make sure it contains the appropriate safety features of a more use-oriented jacket.

Serious long-distance riders may purchase three-season suits that are form fitting and stylish, with air flow technology and Kevlar armor to protect knees and elbows. Some suits still use solid pads to protect the wear, most have removable sleeves, and all have a pocket for that essential piece of safety equipment, the cell phone!

Motorcycle racing jackets share many features of other leather jackets, such as armor, and zip-out liners, but they also are made with a racing-grade leather and are much more streamed lined in style, which few exterior pockets or metallic accents. The arms in a racing jacket are usually pre-shaped in a racing crouch position. Icon racing jackets are a popular brand with bikers.

Motorcycle jackets and gear have come a long way. While style is a factor, the high tech features that provide safety and comfort are considered more than equally important.
