So high is the demand for genuine NASCAR (National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing) gear that its 200 licensees keep a full stock of the stock car association's commercial products, including hugely popular NASCAR jackets.
In the mid- to late ‘90s, only race car drivers, their crew and staff wore the colorful, jackets emblazoned with the sponsor's, team's and driver's names. In 1997, however, to encourage fan support, authentic NASCAR jackets were given to celebrities to wear: Rappers like Snoop Doggy Dog, Cam'Ron and Lil' Cease were seen in the prized jackets at music award events, and their endorsement sparked an interest that spread through the general public. Fans and future fans began to buy the apparel, and now the fad for racing jackets is a full-fledged fashion trend.
Genuine NASCAR racing jackets sized for men, women and children, are manufactured by several licensed companies and come in various natural and synthetic fabrics – the most popular being leather, cotton twill, and micro fiber. Some jackets are made with an inner and outer shell, usually nylon, with a synthetic fill. Most are embroidered or appliquéd with the specific logo, and names of their favorites drivers and cars, even sponsors. They might have ribbed collars and cuffs, and pockets, depending on the style chosen.
Some styles are termed "replica" jackets because they are made exactly like the jackets worn by their favorite racing team. The body of the jacket often shows the same color as the team they support with sleeves of another color. The front of a coat might display the name of a driver appliquéd in script, or waterproof sparkle ink is used.
NASCAR jackets can become collectibles – typically those that are literally covered in fabric decals, embroidery, appliqués, logos, team names, etc. They are sold in an array of usually bright, high visibility colors. Auto racing fans are enthusiastic, even fanatical about their sport and their favorite teams, and it shows in the jacket they sport.
