In the movie musical Grease, actress Stockard Channing started the fad for Pink Lady jackets when she played "Rizzo," the tough-but-tender leader of a 1950s girl gang called the Pink Ladies. The film also starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, and was based on the Broadway play about the 1950s high school experiences of teenagers at Rydell High.
This film has remained so popular for the last 25 years children and adults continue to buy Halloween and ‘50s parties' costumes fashioned after the characters from Grease.
The movie Grease was originally released in 1978 and has been re-released and shown on television so many times that a whole new generation of young people has grown up loving the retro looks and culture of America in the ‘50s. Some movie fans have formed their own Pink Ladies clubs, and the representative jacket is always in hot demand.
The Pink Lady jacket is often purchased as a part of a costume, however, many women and girls simply wear it as a style statement, a nod to the rock'n roll innocence of a time gone by. The jacket is a charming symbol of middle-class American girls of the ‘50s. It's a feminine, bomber-style jacket that cinches at the waist and cuffs, done up entirely in pink satin, with "Pink Ladies" written in script across the back.
Next time you're rocking and rolling down memory lane, put on your Pink Ladies jacket and head for the malt shoppe!
