United Kingdom tweeds such as those by Harris, Bernat Klein and Linton have supplied the fashion houses of Europe with tweeds that are continuously changing with the times. In the 1920's designers created high fashion tweed suits designed for comfort and relaxed fit. The Chanel suit featured a collarless tweed jacket accented with buttons stamped with the Chanel name. The designer used Linton tweed, a lightweight fabric and added exotic yarns to bring in color and texture to the weave.Historical, valuable Harris tweed is woven exclusively on the Scottish islands of Harris and Lewis. The wool from which it is crafted can only come from native sheep. This extremely resilient cloth is ideal for sports coats and blazers, has a beautiful drape and soft hand. Still woven by hand, production of the prized wool cloth, called "clo mhor" or "Big Cloth" by the Scots, is governed by the Harris Tweed Authority established by the British Parliament - a consequence of large mechanized mills claiming they were producing the handmade tweed, which is a long and laborious process.
