Formal shoes can be easily found right in your tuxedo shop, for rent or purchase. You will find an assortment of styles and colors of shoes to choose from, but if you follow some basic guidelines, you will be able to make the right selection.
Men's formal black dress shoes are to be worn with: tuxedos, dinner jackets and formal dress tails. Black shoes should be worn if the tuxedo trousers are black or grey. If you are wearing a white tuxedo, white shoes are required. The same rule holds for an ivory tuxedo must be accompanied with ivory shoes.
Patent leather, or PVC uppers, make up the shiny formal shoes and are considered the classic, most formal dress shoes. Available styles are either the Oxford (with shoelaces) or pull on with flexible comfort gores.
Wing tip shoes are known for a design cut into the leather, made of soft calf leather or patent leather. Squared tip are the most common formal dress shoe, with the rounded and pointed tips following a close second and third.
Tux tails, the most formal of dress, are not as commonly worn as they once were. But if the invitation requires "full dress" or "white tie", a coat with tails is required. For this ultra formal attire, you must accessorize your ensemble with patent leather shoes, spats, top hat and cane.
Formal dress shoes are also available in boy sizes, including in black patent leather.
