Finding the right prom tuxedo requires a little research, knowledge of tux terminology and the color of your date's dress. From there, your prom tux is a shop away. Formal wear can be scary; new terminology and etiquette to learn; but it is not as hard as you think. Once you know the color of her dress, have fun picking out your tuxedo suit.
For a prom tux, you can go with the classic black or grey, or have fun with colors ranging from pastel shades of blue, strawberry pink, or yellow to the darker colors such as navy, brown, orange and cinnamon. There are even camouflage tuxedos available!
There is a trend for wearing a retro tux:
Bringing back colored tuxedos. If you want a retro tuxedo, be prepared to buy one. While they are about as expensive as a rental, you may have to purchase this type of suit online.Adding a colored vest is a less dramatic alternative to a colored tuxedo. Your vest can be grey, white or the retro baby blue, pink, periwinkle and orange, but you can also have fun with prints (with your date's approval of course!).
A classic tuxedo can be the traditional black tuxedo regular coat with matching pants, white shirt and grey vest. It will work with your date's dress, and you will not need to worry about matching with the color.
If you are looking for a more elegant look, use a cummerbund (a piece of pleated material that wraps around your beltline) instead of the vest. It will change the look of your tux dramatically. You tie color must match your cummerbund, which are commonly found it sets.
Now you need to decide on the type of tie. Should you use a bow or four-in-hand tie? Your choice in tie will be contingent of the type of tuxedo you select. You can even add a Western tie, if you are going for the Old West look. Ask your retail salesperson for the most suitable tie for your ensemble.
Do not be afraid if you do not know how to tie a tie – most rentals include a pre-tied or banded tie that simply wraps around your neck and snaps closed. Bowties are available in a variety of colors – black, red, blue, pink, etc. It is simple and classic. If a bowtie is not for you, you can use an Ascot tie, Windsor, Shar-Pei, or the four-in-hand tie.
Rental tuxedos work well if you are interested in spending the minimum amount of money for your special evening. Most tuxedo stores offer a tuxedo package for a set price, which includes the entire suit, shirt, vest or cummerbund, tie, and cufflinks or studs. Some packages even include the dress shoes. Rentals can be obtained through a local tuxedo store or online mail order.
Measurements are taken at the time of the order and a deposit or credit card is usually required. Plan to order your tuxedo a month before your prom, but check with the rental store for their policy. You will want to be sure you allow enough time to return the tuxedo if there is a problem. If you order your tuxedo online, you will need to have someone help you with your measurements. See link for Formal Wear Sizing. You can also purchase packages, but these typically only include the tuxedo, shirt, tie and cufflinks/studs. The vest, cummerbund, shoes, hats and gloves would be available at an additional cost.
