To ensure an accurate fit for your tuxedo, recruit someone to assist you in measuring your body. Wear light comfortable dress clothes; a collared dress shirt and dress pants. Your assistant will need to use a flexible sewing tape ruler, and record all of the tuxedo measurements twice. Following this guideline, even plus size customers will be able to find the right formal wear.
Other measuring options for tuxedos include: If you current own a suit that fits you well, use that size for the jacket and pants. If you have access to tailor's shop, you could have your measurements taken by a professional. You should not be charged for the service, but if you are, it should be a reasonable amount.
To size your formal tuxedo dress shirt:
- Neck – Put on a button dress shirt with a collar, leaving the top button undone. Wrap the tape measure around the neck at the level where the collar would be buttoned. Do not pull the measure too tight; leave enough space for an index finger to slide between the collar and the neck comfortably.
- Shirt sleeve – With the arm straight down along the side of the body, measure from the base of the neck at the backbone, across the shoulder and down the length of the arm to 1" beyond the wrist. Measure both arms, as some people's arms are different lengths. Select the longest measurement.
To size your tuxedo jacket:
- Chest – Wearing a dress shirt, wrap tape ruler around the back across the shoulder blades, high under the arms to the fullest part of the chest. Slide index finger between tape and chest to allow for comfort. This is the jacket size.
- Jacket length – In sock feet, measure from the top of the head to the floor.
- Short – 5'8" and under
- Regular – 5'9" to 5'11 ½"
- Long – 6'0" to 6'2 ½"
- Extra Long – 6'3" and ove
To size your dress pants:
- Waist - Find the wearer's natural waist, preferably without clothes or a belt hindering the measuring. The natural waist is the area directly above the hip bone at the level of the navel.
- Pant leg – With shoes, measure the outside length of the leg from natural waist to the outside arch of the shoe. Round to the nearest 1/2 inch. This is the "outside" measurement.
Belt guideline:
Use your natural waist measurement, adding up to the nearest inch. For example, if your waist is 37 inches, your belt size is 38 inches.
