A tuxedo vest in black is never out of style. If you want to add a subtle variation in color, a grey vest is an excellent choice. Vests consist of simple construction – sleeveless, inner-jacket covering with a "V" neck and two to six buttons down the chest. Some styles have slit pockets (to hold the wedding band), and others have a strip of material that look like a pocket but does not have an opening.
Other tux vest basics include:
- Full back – a vest with a sewn full panel in the back.
- Backless – has a front panel only that wraps around the back of the neck.
- High cut – vest with more buttons on the front and higher up the chest.
- Pique vest – a formal white vest with waffle texture. Traditionally worn with pique shirt, white tie and tailcoat.
Silk, satin, polyester, and wool are the most common vest fabrics. Consider the time of year and the temperature of your event. Since you will be wearing the vest with a shirt and a coat, summer is not the time of year to wear a wool vest!
Formal vests can be found in plain or textured patterns, creating the opportunity for your personality to shine through! Colors vary from neutral shades to dramatic bolds. With this many selections in color, the opportunity exists to match your vest with your date's dress.
If you are planning a tuxedo for your wedding, consult with your bride before leaping to a bold color. Another popular look in formal vest attire is to match your tie and your vest with the same material and color. If you are unable to decide on a color, select black and move on to other accessories that may bring out other aspects of your individualistic personality.
