Wedding tuxedos - for the groom and groomsmen

A tuxedo is the classic men's formal wear for a wedding, whether you are the groom, the father of the bride, a groomsman, or a guest. The average American man rents a tuxedo two to four times in his life: prom, his wedding and family/friend's weddings.

Tuxedos are the perfect attire for formal or informal weddings. Tuxedos can be found in a variety of colors, styles, coat lengths, formality, brands; the choices are confusing. While the rules of formal dress are made to be broken, you will still want to follow basic dress guidelines.

For the groom and wedding party:

Tuxedo

  • Formal, daytime wedding: charcoal or black coat with tails. Grey striped or matching trousers. Grey or striped vest. White or colored dress shirt. Ascot, four-in-hand or matching striped tie. Darker colors for winter function; lighter colors for spring and summer. Black formal dress shoes.
  • Semi-formal, daytime wedding: tuxedo, with or without tailcoat in range of colors. Darker colors for fall or winter. White or pastels for spring and summer. Formal white dress shirt or color coordinated with jacket. Black formal dress shoes.
  • Formal, nighttime wedding: black coat with tails and matching trousers. White wing collar shirt with white vest. Cummerbund is an appropriate choice. White bow tie. Patent dress shoes.
  • Traditional formal evening wedding: classic black tuxedo jacket and matching trousers. Accessorized with a variety of coordinating shirt, tie and vest colors.
White jacket and matching trousers acceptable for summer or tropical wedding.
  • Semi-formal evening wedding: Grey stroller with striped trousers. Pearl grey vest. Pleated white shirt. Four-in-hand tie.

Most grooms find that tuxedo rental is the most sensible option. Order your tuxedos for the entire wedding party at least four months prior to the wedding. Call to make an appointment at the shop for a fitting. The formal wear store most likely has a preferred procedure for out of town groomsmen to submit their measurements. Be sure to order all of the needed accessories at the time your order your tuxedo. Schedule your final fitting or pick up your tuxedos from the store at least one week prior to your wedding or destination departure. You will want all of the wedding party to try on their tuxedos to ensure all items fit and allow time for adjustments.

If you think you will ever wear a tuxedo again, you may want to consider purchasing your suit. You will end up saving 50 to100% of the next rental fee.

Planning a beach wedding? Think of tropical casual with a formal flair. Consult with your bride but here are some ensembles to consider:

  • Navy blue blazer, white shirt and light colored trousers.
  • Natural or ivory linen suit. Avoid white.
  • Classic charcoal grey or black suit, white shirt, matching dark tie.
  • Dark trousers with white linen shirt; no tie.
