Reflective vests are usually an overall bright color like vivid orange or lime green, but what makes them reflective are strategically placed strips, trims or lettering that are luminous in the dusk and dark, or when shined upon by street or headlights.
People who work outside, whether on an airport tarmac, construction site or highway shoulder are all required to wear reflective safety vests approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). ANSI has classified safety vests into three categories, depending on the kind of hazards each type of worker faces, and models of each class are affixed with reflective strips.
Not just roadway or construction workers wear reflective vests. They are often required gear for members of running clubs and biking clubs, even walking and hiking clubs. Smart joggers and cyclists know that a reflective vest is an essential element of self-preservation, especially when running or biking on trails at dusk, when visibility is the lowest.
ANSI-approved reflective vests are available online and in local sporting goods and work clothing stores. Make sure that the vest you purchase will provide the reflective capability you need for your work or sport.
