There is an extensive list of exercise routines that can use weighted vests for optimum training benefits. At the gym, someone might wear a weighted vest when they are doing squats, lunges, push ups, pull ups, or dips.

Athletes that want to improve their vertical jump, their speed when running, or even bounding will wear these vests as well. Walking and hill bounding are other activities during which people may wear a vest.

Weighted vests are available in a many different weight options. A 10 pound vest is standard but 20 pound maximums are also available. Others can be found in much larger weights for example 40 pound maximums and even more.

Vest

Determining the right weight for you is essential for your body's health. It is recommended that you find a vest that does not exceed ten percent of your bodyweight. This is the most you will want your weight vest to weigh.

Reason being that when you are doing activities such as sprinting, running, or jumping, you will be adding weight to your foot's impact. Increasing this impact too much can create an injury. Most distributors recommend that each person start at 2.5 percent their body weight and gradually increase the amount over time.

Another risk factor when working with weighted vests, is that you may be tempted to use the wrong body mechanics. Be sure to work with a trainer or other professional who can assist you with proper stances etc. This can create serious harm rather than improve your skills.

Keep in mind that weights can be added or removed to the vest, so you might want to buy a heavier weight and just remove some to get started. This will assure you that you will not need to buy a new one as you get stronger and need more weight.

Be sure to read all of the safety precautions that come with your weighted vest. You will want to be certain it is the right weight, the right size, and will contribute to your success with training.

You will need to be careful and pay close attention to your body and its needs while you are working out with a weight vest. No matter the activity, there are risks. Even if you are just walking, you will need to be aware. Never start too heavy, and never increase the weight too quickly. It is much better to be safe and effective, than injured.
