Dr. Klaus Maertens in 1945 was injured while skiing. He wanted to develop a shoe that would allow him to walk throughout the healing process without exacerbating the injury. This is why he created the air cushioned sole. Dr. Maertens shared the idea with a friend who was an inventor, Dr. Herbert Funck. The two of them presented the shoes to many manufacturers in Germany and were rejected time and time again.
After many rejections, the team took their idea to a manufacturer in England, The R. Griggs Group. This company took the air cushion sole idea and created the first work boot in April of 1960. Dr. Maertens name was anglicized and so the brand name was born. Now Dr. Martens is producing a wide line of shoes with the same air cushioned sole including sandals.
