There is no lovelier or more traditional a sight than embroidered Christmas stockings hung one after another across a mantle, proudly touting the names of family members. Truly the only site better, is when they are filled with presents.
Today's embroidered Christmas stockings are a far cry from their humble beginnings which can be traced through several centuries. It is said that 16 th century Dutch children left their wooden clogs by the hearth and filled them with straw for the donkey of "Sinterclass." They also left a small treat for Sinterclass himself who was said to find the treat near the fire and leave gifts for the children in return. The clogs evolved into stockings.
Another legend tells of the story of Saint Nicholas' gift to a poor man's daughters. When it came time for his three daughters to marry, the man had no money for their dowries. With no dowries they would have to be sold to a brothel. Hearing of their predicament, Saint Nicholas came to the family's house one night and dropped three small bags of gold into the girl's stockings that had been washed and hung to dry near the fireplace. Each of the stockings contained enough gold for each of the girls to be married. Particularly in Europe, some families put oranges or tangerines in the toe of each stocking to represent the gold left by Saint Nick.
In America, Thomas Nast is credited for the current image of Christmas stockings. He illustrated the Christmas stockings hung by the chimney in the story "The Night Before Christmas" written in the late 1800's by Clement Moore. Nast is also famous for creating the beloved image of Santa Clause as the plump, jovial fellow with the white beard and red suite.
Beautiful and treasured embroidered Christmas stockings are also a perfect gift that will be enjoyed for many years and probably through many generations. With their intricate designs and vibrant thread colors you will want to keep these works of art out all year
