From the halls of high schools to the halls of office buildings, women of all ages are proudly wearing monogrammed purses by their favorite designer.
They have become so popular in fact, that for those who can't afford the inflated price tags of the originals, there are countless websites and flea-markets that sell designer knockoffs for a fraction of the price. With a price tag of $500 and up, original designer monogrammed purses often cost more money than the owner will ever carry in them. Ironic!
Are we so obsessed with wealth that we will stop at nothing to project a certain status seemingly created by designer, or designer looking, bags? Or do women just like "pretty things?" And what's wrong with a cute $20 purse from a local department store? We may never know for sure, but one answer might be the increased interest in celebrity culture. Starlets and models alike sport and promote designer monogrammed bags. Not only are there photos of them wearing high priced monogrammed bags, but the very same periodicals that carry the photos carry articles that tout these purses as a "must have."
The clever marketers for designer monogrammed purses know the secret. In fact, being drawn to famous people is human nature. That is what one of a team of psychologists studying why people idolize celebrities, James Houran of Springfield, Ill., found. So, does that make us a nation of sheep carrying Prada bags? Yes. No! Well, maybe some. The truth is that each individual's motivation is different.
The designer monogrammed purse is one accessory that places a woman's frivolity in the forefront. But what a worthy frivolity it is. It is quite easily justified; you use it every day ... for years. Whether someone can afford one of these decadent creations, or just a sly knock-off, if it makes them feel better, so be it. It is only disturbing if someone tries to define themselves by a mere accessory or by what someone else deems important. Your status in life is sharply defined by what you contribute to it, not by the bag on your arm. So if you can maintain your perspective, then have fun. Maybe I'll see you at the next knock-off handbag party darling!
