A charming monogrammed towel looks lovely in any powder room. Granted a monogrammed towel is a small accent, but it says; "refinement." Monogramming has been a tasteful embellishment since its beginning in the early middle ages.
Once only for the wealthy, it is now quite affordable and turning up in the most creative places - from monogrammed towels or monogrammed pillowcases to monogrammed pillows for your couch.
If you have never had anything monogrammed before, you may have some questions. For instance, you may be wondering in what order the initials go in. Or, in the case of two married individuals, you may not know whose initials go first.
Although there were times in history when single initial monogramming and two-letter monogramming were preferred, today's standard layout is the three-letter monogram. In the 19 th and early 20 th centuries the rules for the three-letter monograms were created. For instance, Thomas Edward Brown's monogram would have the first initial (T) on the left, the middle initial (E) on the right and the last name initial (B) in the center, larger than the rest.
When dealing with the initials of a married couple, it is most common for the man's first name initial to go on the left, the woman's first name initial to go on the right and their last name initial to go in the center, larger than the rest. However, placing the woman's first name initial on the left with the man's first name initial on the right is also acceptable.
It would be very easy if those were the only rules you needed to know. But in today's modern world, relationships are more complicated, and therefore so are monograms. So far there is no hard fast rule as to how to handle married couples keeping both last names or unmarried partners. In those cases, it is best to do what is most esthetically pleasing.
If you own your own embroidery machine, you can make lovely monogrammed gifts whenever you like. You have complete creative freedom over the color of the thread, the size of the monogram and the font. This allows you to make truly one-of-a-kind pieces.
Whether for yourself or as a gift, lovely embroidery on a quality item will be cherished for years. A beautifully embroidered towel or monogrammed linen tablecloth is traditional yet fresh and will last for years.
