At differing times during the twelve centuries since Mohammed opportunistically leveraged his family's wealth and social position into a religious philosophy, Islamic scholars have declared periods of jihad against traditional Oriental rug designs incorporating animal motifs. Overall, Islamic influenced oriental rug weavers create their Tibetan rug or Persian carpet with an orientation towards highly stylized pure pattern rather than the symbolic and stylized forms of Chinese oriental rug designs which in the main exist free of any Islamic influence.
