Oriental Rugs - Rug and Carpet Designs
In the majority of oriental carpet designs, pictures are generally absent as a messaging motif. Rather than pictures in the Oriental rug, the weaver utilized a great number of ornamental devices from Arabic numbers and arabesque motifs to tiger rug design within the Tibetan rug or to elaborate symbolism catalogued by the Chinese Oriental rug weavers.

Oriental Rug Design Choices Which You Should Consider
Reflecting the powerful impact of Islam, the Persian rug often carried imbedded text fragments from the Koran itself. The Persian rug as prayer rug is well documented not only in the time of Omar Khayyam but even now in the 21st century in down town Baghdad .
At differing times during the twelve centuries since Mohammed opportunistically leveraged his family's wealth and social position into a religious philosophy, Islamic scholars have declared periods of jihad against traditional Oriental rug designs incorporating animal motifs. Instead, these draconian periods substituted highly abstract obtuse geometry rather than tiger rug or bird or plant themes. In any event, these periods and their remnant antique rug kept in museums show a pattern of return to ancient forms traditionally found in Persian rug designs. In many traditional Oriental rug designs the main or center field is a composite of inter-locking arabesques, which is a stylized forked tendril bearing a variety of sensuous curves. The arabesque, modified in many ways represents a core design element surfacing within many Persian rug carpet designs. A cloud band common to Chinese Oriental rug weavers also moved its way into many Persian rug designs over the centuries. Another design element common to near eastern weavers is the botah, or comma like or inverted teardrop shape design found in Oriental rug carpet designs. Whether a Tibetan rug or Karastan carpet, additional design elements invariably include crosses, stars, polygons and assorted geometric forms common to Persian rug designs. Scrolls and diamonds and even the ancient swastika, which originated as a solar symbol, are imbedded within the finished Oriental rug.
Overall, Islamic influenced oriental rug weavers create their Tibetan rug or Persian carpet with an orientation towards highly stylized pure pattern rather than the symbolic and stylized forms of Chinese oriental rug designs which in the main exist free of any Islamic influence.
