Engraved Medical Alert Necklaces
With an engraved medical alert necklace, you have a choice of metals and designs. Most companies offer necklaces in the following materials:
10-karat gold filled
10-karat gold
14-karat gold
Stainless steel
Sterling silverThe downfall to engraved medical alert necklaces is that the pendants have a limit on the number of characters. Many provide space for a maximum 50 characters and spaces. You must abbreviate the information you include on your pendant accordingly.
Flash Drive Necklaces
Some modern medical alert necklaces have a small flash drive that plugs into your computer. This data storage device allows you to record important information, such as allergies to medications, medical conditions and contact information for your family and physician.
The flash drive provides ample room for extensive detail, making it useful for those with extensive lists of health issues. While an engraved medical alert necklace generally has a limit on the number of characters you can include, flash drives are similar in size, are still worn as a pendant and remain compatible with any Windows XP or Vista computer.
Generally, you have three options when choosing a medical alert necklace: USB flash drive, engraved or medical alert button necklace. Each form has its benefits, but they also differ greatly in price.
Medical Alert Button Necklace

If you push the button, it alerts the answering service that you need help. They talk to you via an intercom system and dispatch police or ambulance to your home if needed. They also can call family members or neighbors for you.
You do have to pay for the monthly monitoring service. However, help is simply a push button away. The range on the wireless medical alert necklace is up to 600 feet making it easy to get help, even if you are outside in your yard.
