Personal Emergency Response System - Medical Alert Alarm
A personal emergency response system connects elders and other users with an emergency care specialist. They are effective at helping elderly people who live alone, but are susceptible to falling, medical emergencies or other household emergencies that they are unable to handle alone.

How Personal Emergency Response Systems Work
A speakerphone console connects to your main telephone connecting your phone line to the company’s call center. The speakerphone console usually has two buttons. One is the help button and the other is a cancel button. The help button calls the call center and the cancel button cancels your request for help.
You also receive a small wireless transmitter that has a single push button. This transmitter is attached to a necklace or bracelet. If an emergency arises, the user pushes the button on the wireless transmitter. This places a call to the call center where a care specialist answers the call.
Once the call is placed, the care specialist at the personal medical alarm company comes onto the speakerphone. They ask questions to uncover what problem you are having. If it is a question or minor situation, they either will answer the question on the line or call a neighbor or loved one on your contact list to go to your home.
If you are having an emergency requiring police, fire or emergency medical technicians, the call specialist dispatches them for you. They remain on the line with you for support until help arrives.
If you do not respond to their questions over the speakerphone unit, they automatically dispatch police and ambulance to your home. Personal emergency response systems ensure that you always have the help you need even when you live in a remote area.
Situations when Personal Emergency Response Systems Help
A common situation where personal medical alert systems help is if an elderly person falls. Their weakening muscle tone often requires help to get back on their feet, especially if they fall between an object and the wall. With the push button, the elderly person calls for help.
If you become sick, such as feel that you are having a heart attack or are having a stroke, push the button and help arrives in minutes.
A personal emergency response system is also useful for getting reminders to take medications or set appointments with your doctor.
