Getting Hair Loss Help That Works

* Exploring The Gene Frontier For Hair Loss Remedy. Since heredity and gene composition play an important part in an male's hair loss potential, current hair loss research into gene therapy affecting hair loss has potentially far reaching consequences.

While there is no imminent break-through, the incremental steps necessary to establish a basic medical foundation for gene therapy technology for hair loss is proceeding.

* Making Mice Hair Grow... Humans Next? At the Howard Hughes Medical Center at the University of Chicago , scientists conducting a hair loss study were able to transform skin cells into hair follicles in mice by the introduction of a protein called beta catenin. In mice, this hair loss research lead to an over abundance of hair on the animal. The underlying molecular process for hair follicle development under this research is still not understood.

* Alternative Hair Transplant Technique Using "Grafts". A new hair transplant technique is being developed that will eliminate the necessity of cutting a strip from the back of the head which is the traditional way of doing hair transplant surgery.

Dr William R. Rassman, of the new Hair Institute, is developing what he calls Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Dr Rassman's hair transplant treatment involves removing individual hair follicles from the back of the head thereby eliminating the need for a broad incision.

The procedure presently involves 500-600 grafts. As the technique is improved through more hair loss research it may be possible in the future to perform upwards of 1,000 grafts.

The Follicular Unit extraction method takes 3 sessions separated by 2 weeks to allow healing to occur. The wound caused by the follicle extraction is left to heal by itself. The ideal hair transplant candidate is a person whose follicles can be removed without splitting (transaction). If a follicle splits then it will die.

* Industry Research Efforts. Bristol Meyers Squibb is conducting a hair loss study on a minoxidil-type topical application which it claims will be significantly more effective as a hair loss treatment for male pattern baldness, alopecicia areata, and female pattern baldness.

It is thought that the Bristol Meyer Squibb product belongs to the class of chemicals called potassium channel openers (which also includes minoxidil), which are also useful in the treatment of hypertension and other cardiovascular problems as well as hair growth.

Merck has applied for a patent on a topical application of finasteride (Propecia) on the basis of its own hair loss research. The FDA has approved the oral use of a Propecia pill and the product has become a popular and effective hair loss remedy. Other companies have tried to develop a topical application of finasteride but problems have developed with the rate of absorption (both too much and too little).
