Deciding On The Best Hair Loss Medication

There are a number of effective hair loss medications, for both men and women, some approved by the FDA, that are successful hair loss treatments.

* How Hair Loss Medications Work. The hair loss medications (whether used internally or topically) act as inhibitors of DHT (the leading hormonal cause of hair loss and baldness) or as treatment of scalpel conditions associated with hair loss. Using a hair loss medication is a proven pharmaceutical method for preventing hair loss.

Hair Loss Treatment

* Considering Propecia Medication. Propecia (Finasteride), a widely used hair loss medication, is a once-a-day pill from Merck that is FDA approved and has been shown to help a majority of men with male pattern baldness.

According to Merck, a majority of men using Propecia reported their bald spots (on the top of the head) getting smaller, a reduction in the amount of hair loss and an improvement in the appearance of their hair.

Propecia is not approved for women, especially for hair loss after pregnancy. There is a generic form of Propecia called Finpecia, which is manufactured by Cipla. Finpecia contains the same active ingredient (finasteride) as Propecia.

* Proscar Medication From Merck. Proscar (finasteride) is another Merck product that is primarily prescribed for prostate enlargement. As an anti-androgen, Proscar works to prevent testosterone from being converted into DHT, the prime cause of hair loss. The FDA is currently considering the use of Proscar as hair loss treatment.

* Rogaine Uses And Benefits. Rogaine (Minoxidil) is hair loss medication approved by the FDA as a topical application from Pfizer, for both men and women, used as a hair loss treatment.

Rogaine can be obtained on a non-prescription basis. There is an extra strength (5% - by prescription) version of Rogaine (for men) that claims to accelerate hair re-growth within two months.

The minimal side effects (of the 5% solution) are scalp itch and irritation. The less concentrated (2% solution) version of Rogaine is recommended for women and is just as effective but takes an average of four months to see results. It is unclear how Minoxidil works.

One scientific school argues that it increases blood flow. Another scientific school argues that Minoxidil directly stimulates DNA cells in the hair follicles. Either way, the FDA agrees that Minoxidil works as a hair loss solution and as an effective hair loss treatment.

Minoxidil combinations add beneficial agents to a minoxidil base to speed the delivery of the topical application and increase the effectiveness of the hair loss treatment. Xandrox is a commercial product that combines a 12.5% solution of minoxidil with azelaic acid, which is added as a DHT inhibitor. Xandrox also contains betamethasone valerate which is a corticosteroid added to counteract the skin irritation caused by the azelic acid.

One current hair loss remedy is the concurrent use of a high concentration topical minoxidil, retonic acid, a topical spironolactone (an anti-androgen that decreases DHT), and a topical azelaic acid. It is also recommended that the regime be combined with a daily oral dose of a finasteride (Propecia).
