Estrogen...Menopause ... And Hair Loss
* Declining Estrogen Process. With the onset of menopause, a woman's level of estrogen declines. Estrogen has the ability to block testosterone from forming DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the leading cause of hair loss in men and women.
As a woman ages, and her estrogen levels decline further after menopause, DHT adheres to the hair follicle's root resulting in hair loss estrogen and finer hair, a shorter hair growing cycle and eventually permanent hair loss.
* When Oovulation Ceases... Estrogen Drops In Hair Follicles. Menopause occurs over time as a woman's supply of eggs is depleted and ovulation stops. The pituitary gland produces a hormone that stimulates the ovaries to produce estrogen.
After menopause, and the cessation of ovulation, the amount of estrogen produced by the ovaries drops. Estrogen moves through the blood to estrogen receptors throughout the body, including hair follicles. As estrogen production declines after menopause, the body is less able to block the formation of DHT.
* Types And Complexity Of Estrogen. There are three forms of estrogen in a woman's body: estraiol (the principal estrogen produced by the ovaries before menopause), estrone (a weaker estrogen produced both by the ovaries and other hormones) and estriol (the weakest form of estrogen - produced from other estrogens.
After menopause, the estrone form of estrogen becomes the main estrogen in a women's body. The ovaries continue to produce estrone after menopause and the adrenal gland produces andostenedione, which the body's fat and muscle converts into estrone.
* Getting Hair Growth From Hormone Replacement Therapy. Hormone replacement therapy, including hair loss menopause, involves supplementing the body's estrogen through medication. There are a variety of estrogen supplements some of which contain a single estrogen or others that contain a mix of estrogens.
* Products To Consider. The most common estrogen based hair loss remedy is a product named Premarin, which contains a mixture of estrogen. Premarin is made from the urine of a pregnant mare. Estrogen products come in oral form (Premarin), skin patches (Estraderm) and vaginal (Estring).
* Your Body's Back-Up Sources Of Estrogen. The menopausal ovary continues to produces the steroid androstenedione, which is converted to estrone by the skin and certain appendages to estrone. The adrenal gland is also a post menopause source of androstenedione, which also can be converted into estrone.
* Some Women Get It... Some Don't. A number of women experience no hair loss related to menopause, or even any excessive hair thinning after menopause. The postmenopausal women who do experience female hair loss often experience a loss of self-confidence and negative impacts on their lifestyles.
It is important to get qualified medical help from a doctor specializing in the care of menopausal women and from hair care specialists familiar with the complications created by menopause and hair loss.
