What's In A Hair Removal Cream.. How Does It Work?
Depilatories (substances that chemically remove hair) are hair removal products that come in lotions, creams, gels, sprays and roll-on applications.
The chemical base of depilatories is an alkaline substance (usually sodium or calcium thioglycolate) that breaks down the hair's protein (keratin), which in turn makes it easy to wipe off the hair.
As a result , facial or pubic hair removal is only surface deep. It is important to follow the instructions on the product's package because, improperly used, the chemical base can be very irritating to the skin. For that reason, it is suggested that depilatories not be used around the eyes.
* Managing Health Risks When Using Inorganic Substances. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has measured the pH value of hair removal (depilatory) products to determine the risk of skin irritation from the products. The pH value of the hair removal product can have a major bearing how it affects the skin.
Hair removal creams, lotions and sprays are a quick way to remove unwanted hair. Unfortunately, the hair re-growth starts in several days since the hair removal is only on the skin surface.
There is a risk of an adverse skin reaction to the chemical ingredients in hair removal creams, hair removal lotions and hair removal sprays. It is best to try a small area of skin to determine if the hair removal product will cause a low-level burn, stain or inflammation. If there is an adverse reaction, use of a cortisone or antibiotic crème (Neosporine) is suggested.
* Avoid Contact With Cuts And Scratches. Common sense dictates that the hair removal product not be applied to exposed skin areas such as cuts and scratches. Some hair removal creams have an offensive odor.
* Normal Application Of Facial Hair Removal Cream. In applying the hair removal cream, hair removal lotion or hair removal spray, it is best to first use a moist, warm cloth on your facial area in order to prepare the hair and open up the hair follicles.
Most product sponsors have a recommended time for leaving their hair removal product on the skin. It is primarily a function of the concentration of the skin-irritating chemical in the product. The hair removal cream product dissolves the hair, which can be wiped off with a washcloth.
* You'll Get A 'Sulfur' Smell During Treatment. Hair removal cream products and hair removal sprays have a negative reputation for being smelly. A number of manufacturers add a deoxidizing reactant to their hair removal products in order to dampen or reduce the sulfur-like smell that is produced when the hair's protein (keratin) is being broken down.
* Hair Removal Creams Offering Hair Re-Growth Inhibitors. There are a number of hair removal crèmes (Vaniqua) and sprays (Kalo) that claim to inhibit hair re-growth leading to permanent hair removal. There is no clinical study to support those claims. Vaniqua has done a number of studies suggesting that in a majority of women (but not all) using their product hair re-growth is slowed.
* Laser Hair Removal - Alternative Treatment Option. The trend in hair removal is laser hair removal which is as fast as the use of hair crèmes, lotions and sprays but more expensive. The FDA has not approved either laser based or depilatory products for claims of permanent hair removal. Laser treatments, however, have been granted an interim status of "permanent reduction" of hair re-growth.
