What is a shower stool?
A shower stool is a free-standing seat for use in the shower. Unlike a shower chair, it does not have a back like a traditional chair.
What makes is different from a shower seat is that it is not attached to the shower. If you wanted a seat permanently attached to your shower you need a shower seat. Even though they do not have backs, a shower stool can come with handle-like arms on each side for added stability for the bather.

What to look for in a shower stool.
When shopping for you shower stool you may find yourself distracted by extras like cushions and baskets. They are great additions, but you must first find the right stool for you. The features you should be concerned with first are:
- Ability to adjust the height. The standard seat height may be too high or too low to be comfortable.
- Built in handles. This is particularly important if the person using the stool has trouble lowering themselves into, rising up from or situating themselves in a seat.
- Non-skid tips on the legs. These will prevent the stool from sliding in the shower.
- Drainage holes. These holes in the backrest and seat drain puddles water and prevent mildew and or mold problems.
- Folding mechanism. If you don't have much extra room in your bathroom, and who does, it is nice to be able to fold the stool away when not in use.
