A raised toilet seat can give you that extra measure of safety that you need. The reason why a few extra inches make such a difference is that most individuals with mobility issues have trouble sitting down on and getting up from a toilet seat.

The farther down they need to squat, the weaker and more unsteady they become. It's a common everyday task that most people take for granted, but for those that need it, the additional height provided by this adaptive aid provides an affordable and obtainable solution.

Raised Toilet Seat

A standard toilet seat is only 15 inches from the floor. The ideal height, with the addition of a raised toilet seat is 17 – 19 inches from the floor. However, that may vary depending on your height. The fact is that those additional 4 inches make a big difference.

Raised toilet seats can be purchased in many retail stores, medical supply stores and on the Internet. You may even be pleasantly surprised at some of the new styles that are so much more aesthetically pleasing than the old models. These new designs even offer options such as armrests, adjustable height and different seat surfaces.

Something to keep in mind if you use a wheelchair is that the height of the toilet seat should be equal that of your wheelchair. This will allow for a level, horizontal transfer. If you are just not comfortable with having a raised toilet seat in your bathroom, there is another option. You can have a plumber elevate the entire toilet from the floor. This method does not significantly change the toilet's appearance.

Since we are on the topic of safety in the bathroom, you may want to consider the additional safety benefits of adding grab bars around the commode and tub or shower, or using a shower chair or stool. A few small changes can make your bathroom a safer and more enjoyable place.
