Mobility scooters return freedom and independence to individuals of all ages who have trouble walking. Plus, enormous advancements have made scooters safer and more reliable for everyone.

Find, Compare, and Buy a Mobility Scooter

If you have thought about purchasing a mobility scooter but are concerned about the safety, you need not be concerned. As with any vehicle, you simply need to be a knowledgeable, careful and courteous driver.

Today's mobility scooter is dependable and easy to maneuver. Even so, some very important questions to ask are; "Can I cross a steep hill with this scooter?", "Can I stop when I need to with this vehicle?" and "Can I climb a curb?"  Different models have different abilities. Make sure your mobility scooter suits your needs.

To answer these questions, researchers conducted performance tests. They calibrated the angle at which a scooter begins to tip sideways and they measured stopping distances.

Here is what they found:

Sideways Tipability

The FDA reports sideways tipping should be a concern for indoor-outdoor scooter buyers. When shopping for a scooter, ask about the results of their tipping testing. Testing revealed that not all models are the same. Some mobility scooters are more stable and resist tipping better than others. This is a key point to cover with the sales person.

If you plan to drive regularly outdoors on open ground, across hills, and potholes, you need an outdoor scooter. Outdoor mobility scooters are larger, heavier, and more powerful. Although they look more rugged then indoor scooters, indoor-outdoor scooters are not designed for rough ground and uneven terrain. You will need an outdoor scooter for safe outdoor travel on a regular basis. Inquire if the model you are looking at comes with an anti-tipping device on each side. They help to prevent side tipovers in many instances. Even so the safest solution is to buy an outdoor scooter if you plan to use it outdoors.

Topping

Mobility scooters come with either regenerative (automatic) or manual brakes. And the fact of the matter is that scooters have excellent and reliable breaking systems. Even so, it seems that scooter accidents are increasing in retirement centers according to a number of retirement center managers.  The fact is that that there are more people driving scooters. A medical journal suggests that scooter accidents are caused by inadequate driver training, inattentive drivers and drivers with slowed reaction times. Driving experience will surely improve a driver's ability. Even so, when driving down hill at any speed, learn the scooter's limits. When you test drive scooters, be sure to include a situation where you can brake as you go downhill.

When shopping for your mobility scooter, also be sure to inquire about the cost of batteries, battery rechargers and scooter lifts and carriers.
