There are important considerations when choosing a fish oil supplement :
• Omega 3 content. Every fish oil supplement is slightly different from the next. Some contain a lot of DHA and EPA, as much as 2,000 mg per fish oil capsule . Some contain less than half that. Many people choose pharmaceutical grade fish oil because it contains a lot of omega 3 and no contaminants, like mercury.
• Check up on the manufacturers of the fish oil supplement. Because supplements aren't legislated by the FDA, the actual content of fish oil in the capsules can be different than what the label suggests. Read consumer magazines, ask friends, physicians, naturopaths, or nutritionists about what companies have the best reputations.
• Never buy in bulk, even if you're getting a great deal. Fish oil can go rancid very quickly, which makes it lose its effectiveness and taste very bad. It is better to buy smaller quantities and keep them refrigerated.
• For good results with omega 3 fish oil, vitamin E should be taken with a fish oil supplement.
• Take fish oil supplements with meals. Fish oil can cause nausea, belching, flatulence, which can be avoided by taking them with meals.
• Spread out taking fish oil over the day. If you need to take 3,000 mg of fish oil per day, take it in three 1,000 mg doses. This prevents potential side effects. Also, with most supplements, smaller doses over the course of the day stay in the body longer than a single dose one a day.
• If you have bad side effects from fish oil, switch brands. Fish oil comes from many different types of fish, and not all fish oils are the same. Feel free to experiment to find the one that works best for you.
Despite all of its health benefits, fish oil also may be bad for certain conditions. People with diabetes should consult their doctor before adding a fish oil supplement, because it may interfere with blood glucose levels.
People with blood clotting disorders or who are recovering from surgery should not take fish oil, because it inhibits platelet clotting. This may also increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
Large doses of fish oil can also suppress the immune system. Consult your doctor before using fish oil supplements if you have any existing immune system problems.
