Unfortunately, the majority of Americans haven't been getting the entire amount of omega 3 fatty acid that they need in their diet. According to the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine, adult males should get about 1.6 grams of omega 3 per day. Adult women should get about 1.1 grams per day, unless they are pregnant or breastfeeding women, in which case they should get about 1.3-1.4 grams per day.

Sources For Omega 3 And Vitamin A

Omega 3

A good omega 3 source is fish, particularly cold water fish. These types of fish have more fat than warm water fish, and a three ounce serving can provide anywhere from 1.05 to 1.81 grams of omega 3 to the diet. There are also omega 3 fish oil and cod liver oil supplements, which provide about one fifth of the omega 3 essential fatty acids in a one-gram serving. Because fish oil can turn rancid very easily, these supplements should be taken with vitamin E, which acts as a preservative.

A great preventive health strategy is to recognize the connection between vitamin A and other related health supplement nutrients including milk thistle and omega 3 . Taken together on a regular basis, this triad of related nutrients will distribute health benefits across your bones, teeth, mucous membranes and skin. Plus, vitamin A gives a boost to your immune system.

For vegetarians and vegans, who are typically omega 3 deficient, there are several plant resources that can be used as an omega 3 supplement. Flax seed is an excellent omega 3 food source. This can be purchased as whole seeds, or as flax seed oil, which contains 8.5 grams of the omega 3 fatty acid alpha linolenic acid per tablespoon. Also, walnut oil, canola oil, olive oil, and soybean oil contain high amounts of omega 3 oil , although not in the same concentration as flax seed oil.

A good omega 3 source is Omega 3 6 9 , which contains three types of omega fatty acids. This comes as a cooking oil that is exceptional for salad dressing, or in gel caps. The contents of both are derived from vegetable oils, but the gel caps contain gelatin, making them unsuitable for a vegetarian or vegan diet.

The benefit of omega 3 in the diet was first discovered when scientific studies showed that people who ate fish frequently suffered from less heart attacks, strokes, and high cholesterol. This lead them to consider what was in fish that helped with these problems, a search that ultimately led them to omega 3.

Although cold water fish are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids, many people choose taking supplements over fish for many reasons, among them cost, taste, and contamination, particularly from methyl mercury and other pollutants.
