Stair railings are a requirement for safety, but they can also be an elaborate decorative piece of the structure.

There a few unfamiliar terms associated with stair railings. Here are a few to keep an eye out for:
- Baluster: The baluster (also seen in deck railings) connects the railing to the ground. Sometimes also known as spindles or pickets.
- Newel Post: This is the most important spindle. They are located at the top and the bottom of the stairway and are usually placed on a secured platform.
Stair railings are available in many different building materials. Use the same railing design that wraps around the borders of the deck, or modify them. There is no rule that states they must all be the same.
