Deer fencing is a black plastic 2-inch mesh, usually 7.5 feet high, that is installed completely around the perimeterof the property you are trying to protect. Generally, there are two strengths of deer fencing available:
- Standard fence for light deer populations and when the area being protected is an acre or less
- Heavy duty fence for heavier deer populations, for protected areas larger than an acre, or when the fence disrupts a known deer migration path
Both strengths of fence come with standard UV protection in the plastic to prevent sun and weather damage for many years (manufacturers claim between 8 – 10 years of fence life under standard conditions as a planning guide).
Installation is generally accomplished either with fence posts or by attaching the fence directly to trees along the perimeter of the property. Since the fence is very flexible, obstructions in the fence line and terrain elevation changes are easy to accommodate. However,
There are some points about the installation to keep in mind:
- The fence will not work if it does not completely surround the property to be protected. Incomplete perimeter protection merely amends the path the deer take to get to your delicious plantings.
- Fence posts should be 10 feet long and sunk 2.5 feet into the ground to accommodate the 7.5 foot fence. Generally, these posts are steel T-bar, steel rebar (5/8 inch diameter or greater) or wood. Rebar posts are the most economical and least attractive choice of the three. For a more finished appearance, rebar posts can be sleeved with black utility pipe after they are installed.
- Distance between fence attachment points (posts, trees) is ideally 10-12 feet. If distances grow much beyond this, it is wise to reinforce the fence at the top with a galvanized wire stretched between the attachment points. For known migration paths, reinforce both the middle and top of the fence with wire.
- For longer runs between posts, it is also wise to securely attach the bottom of the fence to the ground with pegs. Manufacturers can provide you with pegs designed for this purpose.
- For new installations, use white flexible strips (cloth or vinyl) attached to the fence to alert the deer to the fence's presence. Manufacturers may provide these with the fence.
- Smaller animals may chew their way through the bottom of the deer fence. If this becomes an issue, use 3-foot width galvanized metal fencing with small mesh as reinforcement along the bottom of the deer fence. Be sure to either bury the bottom end of the metal fence into the ground, or bend approximately one third of the 3-foot width away from the protected property and secure it to the ground, leaving a 2-foot swath of metal fence vertically along the deer fence.
