Spa filters play the biggest impact on your spa's water quality
Spa filters play the most important role in your spa's water quality. A spa filter's job is to trap contaminants that will put a strain on your spa's pump. A dirty or worn-out filter simply can't do its job. Two of the most well known and trusted makers of spa filters are Sundance Spas and Jacuzzi Spas.

Seasoned spa owners use a filter rotation method. While your dirty filter is soaking in cleaning solution, you replace it with a clean, dry spare. Using this method, you will never have to wait to use your home spa, and your hot tub filters will last longer.
Even with the best care, after a year or so, the pores in the filter media lose filtration ability and the filter should be tossed out and replaced.
Considering the hard work they do, spa filters are quite simple devices consisting of only 4 sections:
- Pleated filter media made of polyester micro-pore fabric that traps contaminants,
- A center core where water passes through,
- Molded end caps to hold the pleated media together,
- Some hot tub filters have bands to keep the pleats organized. These should never be removed.
Filters with a higher square footage will remove more particulate matter from the water, but also need more frequent cleaning. Higher square foot filters also cost a little more.
Spa filter cartridges should be rinsed every two weeks (more often when the bather load is heavy). Use a garden hose, and apply the water stream at a 45-degree angle, making sure to dislodge all foreign matter by spraying between each pleat.
Remember to always follow your equipment manufacturer's instructions for removing and reinstalling filter cartridges. However, you will do well to follow these spa filter rules of thumb:
• Never sue a power-washer to dishwasher to clean dirty filter cartridges. The high water pressure will damage the media.
• Never use brushes to clean dirty filter cartridges
• Though household bleach may seem to do a good job of cleaning your filter, it weakens the fibers in the media. This greatly decreases the filter's life expectancy.
• Spring for the good quality commercial filter cleaner though it may be a little more expensive.
• Use a sock over your skimmer basket. It will keep debris from ever reaching your filter.
