A portable spa is completely self-contained within its exterior cabinet. Its electrical, heating, and filtration systems are all contained within the unit. They are designed with the durability to go anywhere and the portability to be moved easily.
This means that you can move your portable spa from the living room to the patio whenever you want, with ease. Portable spas are also well insulated to retain heat, so that they are ready when you are.
Built-in spas are considered permanent. The filtration and heating systems are not contained within the unit, but are located in a remote area away from the spa. Each time you use your built-in spa, you need to heat it to your desired temperature, as they are not insulated as the portable spas are.
When shopping for portable spas, be sure your spa dealer answers all your questions. Don't be afraid to ask your questions, because, like everything else, and educated consumer is a happy consumer. It is not uncommon for buyers to ask for a private "test soak" so they can feel the jets and the overall comfort of the spa.
To make shopping even easier, here is a list of things to consider while shopping. You may find it helpful to print it out and take it with you when you go.
- Does the water remain hot and clean when the spa is not in use?
- Can you customize your spa experience by manipulating the jets and jet systems?
- Do the jets and pump make much noise?
- Is the filtration system balanced? Is the water continuously filtered 24 hours a day? Are the filters easy to get to?
- Is there programming required by the heating and filtration system, or is it fully automatic?
- Is there an automatic clean-up cycle for after use?
- Is the heater in an environment protected from corrosion? It is typically the most vulnerable component of the spa.
- Are the controls easy to operate and adjust?
- What are the electrical specifications (115v or 230v) of the spa? (115v is typically less expensive to install)
- What is the seating configuration? Is there lumbar support for your back? Can you move around easily?
- Are the spa components fully backed by the manufacturer's warranty?
- What is the estimated monthly cost of operation? How energy efficient is it compared to other models?
- Is the spa totally insulated?
- Exactly what is covered under the warranty and for how long? A good warranty should include the heater, surface/structure, components, tile and skirt/cabinet.
- Compared to other brands, how does this manufacturer's warranty look? Be watchful for undesirable limitations or exclusions.
- The manufacturer and dealer you choose are very important. Obtain information on both. How long have they been in business? Ask about the dealer's service policies.

- Ask for customer references.
