From their origins over 3,000 years ago in China, wind chimes have been important in both religious and home decoration, so it is no wonder that Chinese and Japanese wind chimes enjoy the popularity that they do. Often associated with the practice of Feng Shui, this type of chime is thought to bring luck and harmony into the home.

Most often these wind chimes are made from metal or bamboo, but other materials are popular in some Eastern cultures, for example the Japanese value indoor glass wind chimes called furin. Many of the major American wind chime companies draw their inspiration from the wind chimes of the
East, including Music of the Spheres, which has tunings based on Chinese, Japanese, Mongolian and other Asian scales, or Woodstock , which bases many of its designs and concepts from Asian forms and beliefs, such as Zen Buddhism and Feng Shui. The first kind of Eastern wind chime was developed in China. These chimes were clapperless bells, called bianzhong, which were hung side by side on the eaves of religious temples. Soon, similarly designed bells became popular household decorations, thought to suppress bad luck and promote good fortune.
