Usually, glass is used for the sail, also known as the windcatcher, or as ornamentation just below the support ring. It can be molded into many different shapes, from angels to animals, sailboats to abstract designs, and can be stained or colorless. Sometimes, hardened glass is used to make the chimes themselves.
These chimes are perfect for indoor use, for example placing them near an opened window. Woodstock has many excellent models of high quality glass wind chimes, including the Nordic Bell line, based on 18th century Norwegian bells, and the Chimes of South Africa line, which offers a fair, reliable wage to the South African women who make them.
Some of the earliest known wind chimes were constructed from glass. In the 1300s, a small indoor wind chime called the furin became exceptionally popular for both decorative and practical reasons.
The furin were used to signal breezes coming into Japanese houses on hot, humid days. Today, the annual Furin Festival is one of the most popular Japanese celebrations, second only to New Year's Day.
