Wind Chimes - Copper, steel, brass, aluminum

Metal the most popular material for the tubing of outdoor wind chimes because of its durability and easy care. There are four major types of metals used in wind chime construction: copper, steel, brass, and aluminum.

Find, Compare and Buy Chimes

• Copper
Copper tubing is an inexpensive material, so that should cause the price of the chime to decrease. However, copper can have a clangy sound if certain preventive measures aren't taken in its construction. Also, copper tarnishes quickly, so if the tubes are not weatherproofed, the chime may need more care after prolonged exposure to the elements.

• Steel
Steel is a good metal for wind chimes and wind bells because of its resilience and its relative low cost. Although it can corrode when exposed to the elements, particularly if it is not stainless, some wind chime enthusiasts argue that this improves its overall sound quality, which can sometimes be too tinny.

• Brass
Brass has a strong, full sound and a lovely appearance, making it an excellent material for outdoor and indoor chimes. Brass is also very malleable, so there are a multitude of styles of brass chimes available, usually at very reasonable prices.

• Aluminum
Aluminum is a very popular material for wind chime construction. Many of the high-end wind chime companies, such as Music of the SpheresT and Arias , use it exclusively. Aluminum is easy to care for, durable, and produces consistently clear, beautiful tones year after year. It can also be easily tuned to several different scales and octaves, and capable of producing numerous tones. It is a comparably expensive material, but because of its enduring sound quality and effortless preservation, aluminum is a good choice for long lasting wind chimes.
