Like wind chimes, windsocks originated and were popularized in China and Japan. In Japan, they became a symbol of the male offspring of the house, and every Boy's Day, each family with a son would fly bright red koi-shaped windsocks to symbolize the oldest male child, and smaller black koi for each younger boy. They have since extended this tradition to include the female children of the family.

Windsock

In the West, windsocks are one of the most popular everyday home and garden decorations today. They combine practicality with beauty, letting a person gauge the force and direction of the wind without leaving the house. Variations on the windsock include garden spinners, which are designed to spin in strong winds, and helixes, which are corkscrew-shaped instead of the typical tube shape of a standard windsock.

While the earliest windsocks were made from paper or fine silk, they are now most often made from weather-resistant synthetic materials to increase their durability and versatility. Instead of being hung out to celebrate a single day, they can be used as everyday decorations for the home and garden.
