Under cabinet lighting bulb types
There are three types of bulbs that are favored for under cabinet lighting. Fluorescent is one. It is an energy-efficient lamp that produces light through the activation of the phosphor coating on the inside surface of a glass envelope. They have a long life, are dimmable, and have a warmer-toned light. Incandescent bulbs are the second type. They are the most "traditional" type of bulb and produce light through a glowing filament. The third type is the Halogen or xenon. This is a type of incandescent lamp that contains halogen or xenon gas. This will cause these bulbs to burn hotter and brighter than a standard incandescent lamp. The down side is that their high heat can adversely affect food stored in the cabinets above because your cabinets are no longer a cool, dry place. There are two traditional types of light fixtures for under cabinet lighting. Strip lights were the first on the scene and are the most common. They are long linear bulbs or a string of lights contained in a single fixture. They come in standard lengths ranging from 12 to 36 inches, and you can use any of the three types of bulbs. The other type are "Puck" lights. As their name indicates, they are shaped like hockey pucks. They are very shallow (one inch deep) low-voltage fixtures that are usually run in series under the cabinets. They provide more flexibility than the more traditional strip lights.
