Choosing Wood Cabinets
Want the rich look of wood cabinets? Before you spend 50% of your kitchen remodeling budget on the cabinets of your dreams, you should know exactly what you want.
Find, Compare, and Buy Kitchen Cabinets
Nothing compares to the warmth and beauty of wood cabinets. But there is so much to choose from when buying wood cabinets that it will make your head spin. You need to decide on the type of wood.
Do you want hickory, oak, cherry or a more exotic wood? Once you decide on your material you need to decide on the style of the cabinet door. This is arguably the hardest decision you will have to make. Each manufacturer has their own lines of popular styles as well as the more traditional ones. For this reason, you will have an infinite number of styles to choose from. Knowing the basics will help you to quickly narrow down your search.
Even though there are many different types of wood and many different finishes and hardware, there are two basic cabinet door styles:
Framed: This is a traditional style of cabinet with a visible cabinet frame. This is a good choice if the décor in your home is classic.
Frameless: This means that the cabinet door covers the face of these cabinets, hiding the frame. This style provides more storage space than framed varieties. They tend to have a clean, modern look.
There are three routes you can take when shopping for your kitchen cabinets. You pocketbook and timeframe will be deciding factors:
Stock Cabinets - These wood cabinets are pre-manufactured and are available in standard sizes, and widths (usually 3-inch increments). They will have the shortest waiting time and are the most economical.
Semi-Custom – These wood cabinets are also pre-manufactured but they are available with some custom options such as increased depth. They are more expensive than stock cabinets and will also have a slightly longer delivery time.
Custom – Custom wood cabinets are produced by high-end manufacturers or local cabinet makers. In addition to all the standard sizes that you can get in stock and semi-custom cabinets you can also get custom heights, depths and widths. Since the cabinets are made to order the deliver time can be 10 weeks or more. They are also substantially more expensive than your other two options.
This helpful information also applies to other types of cabinets like filing cabinets, gun cabinets and storage cabinets. Whether built-in or free standing, wood cabinetry looks beautiful in any home.
