Probably the most common type of knife sharpener is the sharpening steel. When a knife dulls, the sharp edge of the knife folds over. Certain knives, like ceramic knives, require special sharpening. If you own a dull ceramic knife, send it to a knife sharpening service rather than trying to sharpen it yourself. Ceramic knives may chip or break if sharpened incorrectly.
